Guarding reach distances
Designing adequate reach distances into machinery guarding is essential to mitigate risks associated with access to dangerous parts of machinery. To make things easy, a standard exists with specific measurements to maintain adequate reach distances, BS EN 13857.
The BS EN 13857 standard includes lots of diagrams for ease of interpretation. As with all design based standards, this standard is far easier to apply during the design stage of machinery than it is later on in the development cycle.

C-type standards exist for specific types of machines. The specified reach distances in C-type standards may differ from those stated in this B-type standard BS EN 13857.
