Swing bridge safety upgrades

Upgrading the safety related parts of the control system for a swing bridge at a UK shipping dock.

Working with a controls and system integrations partner, Cenheard helped with the upgrading of a control system. Helping our client meet the requirements of a detailed SRS (safety requirements specification).

Realised benefits

After reaching out to Cenheard, our controls partner quickly realised we were the perfect candidate to undertake the task at hand. We put together our proposal which was to verify the current performance level of each safety function outlined within the SRS. From this we could determine which safety functions (SF) comply and which would require modifications.

After an in-depth investigation into the components used within the existing safety circuit design, Cenheard were able to determine which components needed upgrading. This included extra device monitoring and extra channel’s added to the safety circuit wiring. Certain components were unable to meet the required PL due to incompatible B10d and mean time to dangerous failure (MTTFd) values. In these cases Cenheard identified suitable off-the-shelf replacements.

For two of the safety functions, additional safety rated components were required to give the required safe stop scenarios specified within the SRS. Cenheard determined the requirements for extra I/O on the programmable safety relay. As well as identify suitable components for the equipment’s salt water environment.

Proving the concept

With the upgrade requirements now determined, Cenheard conducted a second SISTEMA report as per the new design the verify the compliance of each safety function. With the performance level requirements fully met for each safety function, and in some instances exceeded. The client was provided with all findings and Cenheard’s recommendations.

With our client happy with all of the proposed upgrades, significant cost savings were realised by improving what was already there. By no longer having to completely redesign the SRP/CS our client went ahead and implemented all the required changes. Cenheard maintaining a significant presence within the design to ensure the wiring schematics met the requirements outlined within Cenheard’s report.

Our controls partner then requested Cenheard to conduct a safety function test (SFT) and factory acceptance test (FAT) on the upgraded system. This was to verify the panel and safety circuit construction. Cenheard’s internal engineering team wrote and conducted both tests, providing the client with peace of mind. The FAT providing proof of the panel build quality. And the SFT providing compliance of all safety functions with the SRS during Site Acceptance Test (SAT).
