Introduction
Where a client requires more than one contractor for their project, they must appoint a principal designer.
The principal designer role replaces the coordinators role under CDM 2007.
Principal designer’s manage the pre-construction phase of a project, while principal contractors manage the construction of the project.
Summary of a principal designers role
- Plan, manage and monitor the pre-construction phase of the project.
- Design the technical and organisational aspects of project. Including the various stages and time periods.
- Assist the client in the provision of the pre-construction information.
- To provide information to every designer and contractor involved with the project.
- Liaise with the principal contractor.
- Share any relevant information in the planning, management and monitoring of the project.
To ensure that, so far as is reasonably practicable, the project is carried out without risks to health or safety, principal contractors must coordinate matters relating to health and safety during the pre-construction phase.
