Introduction
The aim of this toolbox talk is to increase staff awareness of drugs in the workplace.
The use of regular toolbox talks, if done effectively, will significantly improve the safety culture within your organisation. This will increase the safety awareness of the workers, and as a result reduce the likelihood of accidents and unsafe occurrences.

Drugs at work
Drugs can loosely be described in two categories:
- Recreational
- Medicinal
The use of alcohol, smoking and other stimulants such as caffeine, are not dealt with in this training presentation.
Users are encouraged not to allow their drug abuse affect their employment. Where possible, help will be offered to drug users through counselling and medical services. If you suspect an individual is using drugs, report it to a manager
Medication
- Some medicines can affect your ability to work safely.
- Read the label and inform your manager if there are any concerns.
- Medicines classed as ‘Dangerous Drugs’ should not be used in the workplace except under strict conditions of control.
Controlling the risks
- Company policy on drugs and the workplace should be available – when in doubt, talk to your manager.
- Your employer reserves the right to refer employees for medical assessment.
- Your employer will consult with representatives or employees where appropriate.
- Absence for treatment through a recognised agency will be considered as normal sickness absence.
- Disciplinary action may be taken to safeguard employees and the company
