Reporting dangerous occurrences

Introduction

The aim of this toolbox talk is to increase staff awareness of the requirements to report dangerous occurrences at work.

The use of regular toolbox talks, if done effectively, will significantly improve the safety culture within your organisation. This will increase the safety awareness of the workers, and as a result reduce the likelihood of accidents and unsafe occurrences.

RIDDOR awareness

RIDDOR stands for Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations. RIDDOR puts duties on employers, the self-employed and people in control of work premises (the responsible person) to report certain serious workplace accidents, occupational diseases and specified dangerous occurrences (near misses).

What sort of incidents are reportable

  • Collapse, overturning or failure of a load bearing part of certain lifting equipment such as:
    • Cranes
    • Mobile powered work platforms
    • Forklift trucks
  • Failures in pressure systems
  • Collapse of a scaffold
  • Contact with or discharge from overhead power lines
  • Failures in breathing apparatus , diving equipment or diving operations
  • Collapse of a building or structure
  • Certain explosions and fires
  • Escape of significant volumes of flammable substances
  • Escape of any substance likely to cause death, injury or damage to health
  • Incidents relating to carriage of dangerous goods
  • Fires and accidental discharge of explosives (in certain circumstances)
  • Failures in fairground equipment
  • Dangerous incidents involving pipelines
  • Train collisions
