Hand tools to safely complete the task

Misuse and poor maintenance of hand tools results in numerous injuries every year. Whilst many may be considered “minor” – all are avoidable by implementing relatively simple procedures.

Always use the right tool for the job!

Maintain all tools in a serviceable condition. If tools are unserviceable, inform your supervisor.

Control and protect tools with obvious risks e.g. knives and chisels. Protect sharp edges and points of tools.

Use correct size spanners and sockets for nuts. If using adjustable spanners, be more cautious as these are more likely to slip.

Always keep hands behind cutting edges when working.

Grind down mushroomed (flattened and frayed) heads of chisels, punches, etc. This prevents splinters flying off. Do not use screwdrivers as chisels – the handles will splinter. Replace split or damaged wooden handles, do not tape them or repair with wire. All hand tools should be fitted with appropriate handles.

Regularly check hammer heads to ensure they are secure and won’t fly off.

Where necessary use specialist tools e.g. insulated screwdrivers on live electrics.

Keep tools in toolboxes or racks when not in use to prevent unauthorized use.

Where applicable ensure suitable Personal Protective Equipment is worn (eye protection, gloves, etc.).
